Fencing Built for Wilson County — Residential, Commercial, and Everything Between
Wilson County mixes established city neighborhoods, newer HOA subdivisions, major commercial corridors along US-301 and I-95, and open rural parcels, sometimes within a few miles of each other. Fence Craft installs fences throughout Eastern North Carolina and nearby areas. From a 6-foot privacy fence on a quarter-acre lot to a commercial chain link around an industrial yard, the requirements differ. The installation standards don’t.
The soil here shapes every project. Lower-lying areas near Contentnea Creek sit on Wilbanks-series clay, a profile that saturates in heavy rain and firms hard when dry. Posts set at standard depth in that soil shift within two or three seasons. We account for it before we dig.

Communities We Serve in Wilson County
Fence Craft works throughout the county, from established city neighborhoods to open rural parcels.
Wilson
The county seat. Properties range from compact lots in historic neighborhoods (where wood and ornamental aluminum are most common) to large commercial and industrial sites along US-301 and I-95. Those sites typically require chain-link perimeters, security fencing, or automated gate systems. The city’s permit process and HOA rules apply to most in-city installations.
Elm City
Smaller-town residential with a mix of standard lots and larger agricultural parcels on the county’s western edge. Wood and vinyl are common for residential work. Larger lots and open land often use chain link or welded wire for perimeter and livestock containment.
Unincorporated Wilson County
Rural routes, farm parcels, and commercial properties outside city limits make up a significant share of our Wilson County work. Lot sizes are larger, soil conditions vary more across the property, and permit rules differ from the city. If your address is in here and you’re not sure we cover your area, call us. We almost certainly do.
What We Recommend for Wilson County Properties
Not every fence type suits every property. These are the four we install most in Wilson County, and the ones we’d recommend first based on local lot types, soil conditions, and how the area is actually used.

Wood Fence Installation
Wood is still the most-requested material in older residential corridors, especially in and around historic neighborhoods where the look fits the surroundings. We use treated lumber, set every post in concrete, and align boards on site. Not pre-fab panels forced to fit.
Best for: Established neighborhoods, privacy, residential lots with close neighbors

Vinyl & PVC
Fencing
Newer subdivisions along US-301 and NC-42 often carry HOA requirements: specific heights, materials, sometimes color. Vinyl handles those constraints cleanly. It doesn’t rot, doesn’t need staining, and holds its appearance through Wilson County’s wet winters and humid summers.
Best for: HOA communities, newer subdivisions, homeowners who want low ongoing maintenance

Chain Link
Fencing
The practical workhorse for commercial and industrial properties along the US-301 and I-95 corridors: logistics yards, school athletic fields, equipment enclosures. Configurable at 6, 8, or 10 feet. For rural properties, the standard choice for livestock areas and outbuilding perimeters.
Best for: Commercial perimeters, industrial facilities, athletic sites, rural containment, dog kennels

Aluminum &
Ornamental Fencing
The right call when appearance matters alongside function: front yards, pool enclosures, school and civic properties, commercial entrances where chain link would look out of place. Corrosion-resistant, low-maintenance, and stable in clay soil when posts are properly set.
Best for: Front yards, pool enclosures, schools, civic properties, and commercial entrances

What Wilson County Soil Does to a Fence
Wilson County sits where the North Carolina Piedmont transitions into the Coastal Plain. The soil changes considerably across the county, and so do the drainage and stability conditions below grade.
Low-lying areas near Contentnea Creek, Wilbanks-series clay
- The seasonal water table can sit within 12 inches of the surface from November through May
- Drains slowly, saturates after rain, contracts hard in dry spells
- Posts at shallow depth shift with those moisture cycles, visibly within a few seasons
Higher ground and rural edges, sandy loam
- Drains faster, more stable in wet conditions
- Still needs wider concrete collars and tighter post spacing
- 6-foot privacy panels on open lots carry significant wind load, so spacing matters
What this looks like on a job site
During a site assessment for a commercial chain-link installation near the US-301 industrial corridor, we reached water-table saturation at 14 inches. We adjusted to 42-inch post depth, extended concrete footings, and added a gravel drainage bed at the base of each hole. That fence line has held square through three full wet seasons.
Wind is the other factor. Eastern NC experiences hurricane remnants and tropical-storm events most years. Posts at minimum depth are the first failure point. We set every post to a minimum of 30 inches (deeper where conditions require it) and let high-PSI concrete reach full strength before panels go up.
Fence Permits and Height Rules in Wilson County
Permit requirements in Wilson County depend on whether the property is within the city limits of Wilson or in an unincorporated area.

- Pool fencing requires a separate permit, with a minimum 4-foot barrier and self-latching gate per NC pool safety code
- Properties in the East Wilson, Old Wilson, or West Nash Street Historic Districts may require additional review. Confirm with Wilson City Planning before installation begins
Wilson County (unincorporated)
- Height rules and permit requirements vary by zoning classification. Confirm with the Wilson County Planning Department before building
- Agricultural and rural properties often have more flexibility on height and materials
What we handle
We coordinate 811 utility locating before every dig. We pull permits where required. We flag historic district properties at the estimate stage to avoid surprises once the project starts.
HOAs
Several subdivisions in Wilson carry active HOA fence rules. We work with homeowners on HOA approval before installation begins. Not sure if your neighborhood has an HOA? We can help find out.

How a Wilson County Fence Project Works
1
On-Site Evaluation
& Planning
We visit the property, walk the fence line, and assess drainage and soil conditions before anything is quoted. For Wilson County properties near low-lying areas, we identify any post-depth or footing adjustments at this stage, before the estimate is written.
2
Professional Fence
Installation
Posts go in at the correct depth for the conditions found on site. Concrete cures fully before any panels, rails, or fabric are attached. We don’t install on green concrete.
3
Final Walkthrough & Workmanship Backing
We walk the completed fence with you before we leave: alignment, gates, latches, and any property-line questions. Every installation is backed by our 12-month craftsmanship guarantee.

Wilson County Fence Installation
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need a permit to install a fence in Wilson, NC?
Most fence projects inside Wilson city limits require a permit. Fees and processing times vary, so confirm with the Wilson City Inspections Division before starting. The city enforces height limits: 4 feet in front yards, 6 feet in rear and side yards. Permit approval is required before construction. Properties in unincorporated areas of the county should check with Wilson County Planning, as rules vary by zoning.
How deep do fence posts need to be set in Wilson County?
In most Wilson County locations, we set posts a minimum of 30 inches deep, and deeper where soil conditions require it. In low-lying areas near Contentnea Creek, the clay can retain water near the surface for months at a time. A post set at 24 inches in saturated clay will shift. One set at 36–42 inches with a proper concrete footing will not.
What does fence installation cost in Wilson County?
Fence cost in Wilson County ranges by material, linear footage, and site conditions. A site visit is the only reliable way to give you an accurate number. Soil conditions, grade changes, and access all affect the final price. We provide written estimates with no obligation.
How long does a fence installation take?
Most residential projects in Wilson County are completed in one to three days once permits are in hand. Commercial perimeters and larger footprints may take longer. Permit processing time adds to the overall timeline, and timelines vary by city and workload. We walk through the full schedule at the estimate so you know what to expect before we start.
What fence material works best for Wilson County properties?
The right material depends on the property type, lot size, and how the fence will be used. For residential privacy, wood suits established neighborhoods. Vinyl suits HOA communities and lower long-term maintenance. Chain link is the most practical option for commercial perimeters, rural properties, and dog containment. Ornamental aluminum works well for pool enclosures, front yards, and commercial entrances where appearance matters as much as function.
Do you install fencing for commercial and industrial properties in Wilson County?
Yes, commercial and industrial work is a regular part of what we do in Wilson County. We install chain link perimeters, security fencing, automated gate systems, and temporary construction fencing for facilities and public properties. Wilson County’s industrial corridor along US-301 and I-95 includes properties with specific access control and security requirements. We handle permitting, 811 coordination, and site prep through the entire installation process.
