Fence Installation Across Edgecombe County’s Tar River Corridor
Edgecombe County is Coastal Plain — flat terrain, agricultural land, and the Tar River cutting through the middle of it. Tarboro and Princeville anchor the county’s center while Rocky Mount straddles the Nash-Edgecombe line on the western edge. Growth here is steady, not explosive, and the property mix leans toward established residential neighborhoods, working agricultural land, and commercial corridors along US-64.
The soil is sandy loam over clay through most of the uplands, with low-lying floodplain near every stream corridor. Permit authority is split between the county, Tarboro, Princeville, and Rocky Mount — each one handles it differently. We’ve worked through all of them.

Communities We Serve in Edgecombe County
Fence Craft installs throughout the county’s towns and rural areas. Each community page covers permits, soil conditions, and the specific fence types we install most in that area.
Edgecombe County
Tarboro
The county’s largest and fastest-growing town. HOA communities on the western side drive heavy demand for vinyl and wood privacy fencing, and the commercial corridor keeps chain link and security work steady.
Rocky Mount (Edgecombe Side)
Rocky Mount straddles the Nash-Edgecombe line. Residential neighborhoods and commercial corridors along US-64 keep both privacy fencing and chain-link work consistent on this side.
Princeville
Directly across the Tar River from Tarboro. Low-lying terrain and flood history shape every fencing project here. Residential properties and community rebuilding drive the work.
Pinetops & Macclesfield
Smaller communities in the central and southern parts of the county. Chain-link and wood privacy fencing are the most common requests on agricultural and rural residential lots.
Battleboro & Surrounding Areas
Along the county’s western edge near the Nash line. Rural parcels, farm perimeter work, and residential fencing make up the typical projects here.

What Edgecombe County Soil Does to a Fence
Edgecombe County sits in the inner Coastal Plain. The uplands are sandy loam on the surface with fine sandy clay underneath — good drainage up top, but the subsoil holds moisture and shifts seasonally. That sandy surface layer is the main challenge. Without enough post depth and a wide enough concrete collar, posts drift over time as the loose upper soil gives way.
Near the Tar River, Conetoe Creek, and the county’s other stream corridors, the picture changes.
Low-lying areas can hold standing water close to the surface for weeks after heavy rain. Properties in or near the floodplain need a different footing approach entirely — you can’t set a post at standard depth in saturated ground and expect it to hold.
We set posts to a minimum of 30 inches across the county and go deeper where conditions call for it.
On a project near a Tar River tributary, we hit standing saturation at 16 inches during the site assessment. We extended to 36-inch depth with an angular gravel drainage bed at the base of each hole before setting concrete footings. That fence has stayed true through two full wet seasons, including a heavy rain event. You only catch that kind of thing if you’re checking soil on every job.
Fence Permits in Edgecombe County
Permit authority is split between the county and individual municipalities here, and each one runs its own process.
Edgecombe County Inspections handles unincorporated areas plus Pinetops, Macclesfield, Leggett, Conetoe, and Speed: (252) 641-7802, 201 St. Andrew St., Tarboro. Tarboro and Princeville each run their own permitting. Rocky Mount’s Edgecombe-side properties go through the City of Rocky Mount.
Pool fencing requires a minimum 48-inch barrier with a self-latching gate per NC building code — that applies county-wide regardless of municipality.
Permit details for each town are covered on the community pages linked above. We handle the permit process on every project.

On-Site Evaluation
We visit the property, walk the fence line, and check soil and drainage conditions before quoting. If the lot sits near a stream corridor or in low-lying terrain, we identify that here.
2

What Customers Say About Fence Craft
Why Edgecombe County Property Owners Work With Fence Craft
We Know the Tar River Corridor
Flood zone conditions, drainage variables, and low-lying terrain near the county’s streams aren’t surprises to us. We assess those conditions at the estimate stage and adjust footing design accordingly.
Nearly 40 Years in the Trade
Roy Garner has been in fencing since 1987. That shows up in how we read a site, set a post, and handle the conditions here that catch less experienced crews off guard.
Residential, Agricultural, and Commercial — Same Standards
Wood privacy fence in a Tarboro neighborhood or chain link around a rural farm parcel — materials differ, standards don’t. We’ve handled both throughout this county.
12-Month Craftsmanship Guarantee
Every installation is backed by a 12-month craftsmanship guarantee covering installation-related defects and structural performance. Manufacturer warranties apply to select products. Storm damage, natural material characteristics, and acts of God are excluded. Full terms provided before any contract is signed.

Edgecombe County Fence Installation — Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need a permit to install a fence in Edgecombe County?
It depends on which municipality your property is in. Edgecombe County Inspections at (252) 641-7802 handles unincorporated areas and several smaller towns. Tarboro and Princeville each run their own permitting process. Rocky Mount properties go through the city. We identify the correct authority for your address and handle the application on your behalf.
How deep do fence posts need to be in Edgecombe County?
We set posts to a minimum of 30 inches, and deeper where site conditions require it. The Coastal Plain soils here are sandy on the surface with clay underneath. Near streams and the Tar River floodplain, saturation can sit close to the surface for extended periods. The right depth depends on what we find during the site visit.
What fence material works best for properties in Edgecombe County?
It depends on the property type and what you’re trying to accomplish. Wood is the most common choice for residential lots, especially in established neighborhoods. Chain link handles agricultural perimeters and commercial security efficiently. Aluminum works well for pool enclosures and front-yard boundaries. Vinyl is a strong low-maintenance option. We walk through the choices during the estimate.
How long does a fence installation take?
Most residential projects are completed in one to three days once permits are secured. Permit timelines vary by municipality — Tarboro, Princeville, and the county office each move at their own pace. Properties in flood hazard areas may need additional review. We cover the full schedule during the estimate so you can plan around it.
