Project Overview
This Rocky Mount family was in the middle of reworking their backyard — new flower beds going in along the property line and a swing set and playhouse already set up on the lawn — and needed a fence that would tie the whole space together instead of just cutting it off. Fence Craft installed a 6′ wood shadow box fence in natural pressure-treated pine, enclosing the yard behind the play area and running past the new plantings.
The pickets are set in the classic shadow box pattern — alternating front and back on the rails — so the fence gives a finished, dressed-up look from both the play area side and the neighbor’s side, rather than only looking good-side-out.

Why This Design Worked
With a play set already anchoring one end of the yard, the priority was a fence that would read as a finished boundary the kids could safely play inside of — not just a line marking where the lawn stops. The shadow box layout does that from both directions: the offset pickets close off sightlines for privacy while still giving each side of the fence its own clean picket face, so neither the family’s play area nor the neighboring yard is looking at the “back” of the fence.
Landscaping a fence line the same week new flower beds go in is a common timing problem — a stained or older fence can make brand-new plantings look mismatched. Installing the shadow box fence in natural pressure-treated pine gave the pansies and azaleas a fresh, light backdrop to grow in front of, rather than competing with an existing fence that didn’t match the rest of the yard’s new look.
